John 6

We are reading through the Gospel of John over 21 days at River Church. We are calling this 21 Days with John. I will be posting a quick thought every day from my reading. I saw three life lessons from John 6 that I would like to share with you.

In John 6:3-13 we see Jesus perform a miracle of provision. He feeds “great crowd of over five thousand people” (John 6:5,10) with “a boys five small barley loaves and two small fish” (John 6:11). We see that they “all had enough to eat” (John 6:12). The life lesson is that little becomes much when placed in the hands of Jesus.

In John 6:35 Jesus reveals himself to us through one of his “I am” statements. There are seven in John and in John 6:35 he declares “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” He is referring to a spiritual hunger or thirst. The life lesson is that only Jesus can satisfy a deep hunger or thirst in our hearts.

In John 6:26-27 we see that Jesus wanted them to seek him not just his miracles. The life lesson is that we should seek the provider not just his provision in our lives. Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the five thousand with a little boy’s lunch for a purpose. That purpose was so that he could reveal himself as the bread of life.

My prayer for today is “Thank you Jesus that little becomes much when placed in your hands. Thank you that spending time with you can satisfy a deep hunger and thirst in my heart. Please help me remember to seek you and not just your provision in my life.”
